What is Social Media?
Social Media Networks are simply online communities having a conversation over the internet. There are multiple "platforms" such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn and more. You interact with others in the community by posting a blog, making a comment about something you've read, or sharing information you've found that you think others would like to know.
A word of caution: There are acceptable codes of behavior involved -- I've heard it described by some as "Cocktail Party Etiquette". Remember to be polite, listen for a while before you speak and don't push your agenda. Infractions will result in shunning or chastising you. The social network is very strict about that. Instead, strive to be helpful, informative and generous... leading to more interactions, connections and followers.
Get started by trying just one or two of the networks that interest you and begin by listening and observing. Join Facebook and put up a Profile (or for business, a Fan Page). Or start with LinkedIn and become part of a large, worldwide network of people sharing information, posting jobs and sharing advice. Start small and keep up with your participation. These sites are free, but they have a way of becoming a black hole of time in your day. Stick with it and participate often.
iMedia Buzz offers a customized entry into the Social Media scene using a series of activities and worksheets to help you identify your company goals, how social media fits into your existing marketing plans and how to generate "buzz" about your product or service. People are interacting in real time and sharing information about what they buy, read, try and eat. The marketing model we've all been using in the past with commericals and print ads is no longer the way to the future. It's time to engage your viewers, build lasting (referral) relationships and become part of the community.
